Top 4 Myths About Cleanses

You’ve probably heard a lot in the media about doing a cleanse or detox for your health. You probably know that most of the diets that fall into this category are considered unhealthy and even unsafe. So naturally, you may have negative associations with the word “cleanse.”  People often hear “cleanse” and start to think of all-liquid diets, expensive supplements and extreme deprivation, all for short-lived gains.

However, there is a lot of misinformation out there. In reality, a cleanse doesn’t have to involve any of the above—and if you cleanse in a way that is carefully healthy and supportive, you can enjoy lasting results in weight loss, energy gain and overall health.

Here are the top four myths you may have heard about cleansing. Understandably, these myths may cause you to be hesitant to try a cleanse.

Keep reading to discover the truth behind these misconceptions and why cleansing might be just what your body is craving, especially around the change of seasons.

Myth # 1: While cleansing, you won’t enjoy the food you eat.

While you might have to eliminate certain foods, cleansing isn’t just eating dry lettuce and celery sticks. There are many delicious meals that include healthy, delicious ingredients that nourish and cleanse your body. If anything, you will be adding new favorites to your meal planning repertoire.

The best part is, many of these meals don’t involve any exotic ingredients and can be prepared easily even if you are a newbie in the kitchen. In fact, cleanse participants generally discover new foods and recipes that they truly enjoy and go on to become staples in their diets after the cleanse is over.

Myth #2:  You have to starve while cleansing.

Depending on how you were eating before the cleanse, you may end up consuming fewer calories while on a cleanse, but, if you are eating enough of the allowable, healthy foods, you should not feel constantly hungry. Going on an extreme low-calorie diet can actually disrupt your hormones and metabolism, making your body less efficient in the long run, so that is not what a healthy cleanse should be about.

People differ as to how many calories their body needs to run efficiently, so a cleanse should not dictate exactly how many calories you consume. By eating whole, natural foods, (like vegetables, fruits and whole grains) that provide you with the necessary nutrients and fiber, you help cleanse your body while still feeling satisfied.  My participants are typically surprised that after the first few days of adjustment, they don’t feel hungry during my cleanses.

Myth #3:  An all-liquid cleanse is necessary to rid your body of toxins.

Liquid-only cleanses (especially the popular lemonade cleanse) have enjoyed quite a bit of popularity. Some celebrities, like Beyonce, have even endorsed these extreme diets. Unfortunately, these types of cleanses often backfire: people often gain the weight back as soon as the cleanse ends and suffer further, as such restrictive eating for several days can be detrimental to our health. These cleanses are extremely stressful on your adrenal glands. Since most of us are already dealing with managing stress and therefore suffer some level of adrenal fatigue already, putting more stress on the adrenals is a terrible idea.

An effective cleanse will be far more gentle to your body by including a variety of whole foods to help nourish you and produce long-term results. Going completely off solid food is not necessary.

Myth #4: Cleanses are all about expensive supplements.

The word “supplement” means just that. Supplements involved in a cleanse should be a supplementary part of the program, but certainly not the primary source of your nutrition. While on a cleanse, you get most of your vitamins and minerals from whole-food sources. In fact, you should strive for that in your daily life as well.

Some supplements are helpful to assist your body in making the most of the nutrients it receives from these foods.  For example, by including daily probiotics in your diet, you improve digestion and can therefore extract more nutrients from the foods you eat. That will help your body get vitamins, absorb minerals and remove toxins from the body.

In addition to all of these benefits, cleansing is quite an effective way to determine if you have any food sensitivities. A cleanse can also balance your hormones and help you to establish healthy habits for your daily life.

Cleanse participants frequently report losing weight and keeping it off, and most have also seen their energy levels improve, their skin issues resolve and even their allergies lessen.

So, the question is: Are you ready to discover the benefits of healthy cleansing for yourself?
